Licensed Physical Therapist (Physiotherapist), Licensed Massage Therapist
Certified Animal Aromatherapy Specialist & doTERRA Wellness Advocate
Serving Dallas, Texas and Beyond Since 1972
For over 50 years, I've dedicated my life to understanding the body's remarkable capacity for healing—first in humans as a licensed physical therapist, then expanding to horses, dogs, and cats through specialized myofascial release therapy. Today, as a Certified Animal Aromatherapy Specialist and doTERRA Wellness Advocate in Dallas, Texas, I combine rigorous medical training with the natural power of evidence based essential oils to help entire families—humans and animals—achieve optimal wellness.
From my earliest years, I was driven by curiosity about how the body works—its incredible resilience, intricate mechanics, and profound capacity for self-healing. This passion led me to pursue formal medical education, establishing the foundation that differentiates my approach from typical wellness practitioners.
My journey began with a Bachelor of Arts from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa (1971), followed immediately by earning my Certificate of Physical Therapy from the University of Iowa in Iowa City (1972). This rigorous medical training in anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics prepared me for over five decades of clinical practice.
Began clinical career as Staff Physical Therapist at Shelby County Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, gaining foundational experience in patient rehabilitation and therapeutic interventions.
Staff Physical Therapist at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, expanding clinical expertise across diverse patient populations and acute care settings.
Advanced to Chief Physical Therapist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas, leading the specialized Cancer Rehabilitation Program—a role requiring advanced clinical knowledge, leadership, and innovation in patient care.
Founded and operated Mitchell Physical Therapy Associates, PC in Dallas—a successful 20-year private practice providing comprehensive rehabilitation services and establishing my reputation for innovative therapeutic approaches.
In 1987, my professional trajectory took a pivotal turn when I discovered Myofascial Release (MFR)—a specialized manual therapy technique that would revolutionize my practice. I undertook extensive training with John F. Barnes, PT, a pioneering physical therapist whose innovative approach unlocked new possibilities for healing.
Over the following decade, I completed comprehensive advanced training including multiple clinical internships, specialized courses, and advanced certifications. This wasn't casual continuing education—it was an intensive commitment to mastering a transformative therapeutic modality.
Completed Myofascial Release I, II, and III with John F. Barnes, building progressive expertise in fascial release techniques that address the root causes of pain and restriction rather than just symptoms.
Advanced training in Pediatric MFR, Myofascial Mobilization, Myofascial Movement Facilitation, and Myofascial Osseous Integration—expanding therapeutic capabilities across diverse patient needs.
Completed extensive clinical internships in Paoli, PA, under John F. Barnes, ultimately teaching over 130 Myofascial Release seminars alongside or on behalf of Barnes himself. Entrusted to personally treat John Barnes on five separate occasions, demonstrating a mastery of therapeutic precision and advanced assessment.
Recognizing the value of integrating multiple therapeutic modalities, I pursued additional professional training:
Earned Certificate of Basic Massage Therapy from the Institute of Natural Healing Sciences, establishing foundational knowledge in therapeutic massage techniques.
Completed Certificate of Advanced Massage Therapy, deepening expertise in specialized therapeutic applications and manual therapy techniques.
Founded Associated Massage Therapists, PC in Dallas, bringing professional massage therapy services to complement my physical therapy practice.
As an equestrian myself, I began observing profound connections between the physical imbalances I treated in human riders and the compensatory patterns their horses developed. This insight sparked a revolutionary idea: What if I could apply my advanced physical therapy and myofascial release expertise to animals?
The results were nothing short of remarkable. Horses that had been written off with chronic lameness or behavioral issues began moving with freedom and comfort their owners hadn't seen in years. This wasn't about "fixing" problems—it was about listening to the body with trained hands and facilitating its own healing capacity.
Founded Equine Therapeutic Center (operating as Animal Essential Health and Essential Health for All), marking my formal transition into specialized animal therapy. Originally based in Moneta, Virginia; now serving clients from Dallas, Texas.
Completed Equine Myofascial Release I training with Mark J. Barnes, M.PT—formally certifying my equine therapy skills and validating my pioneering work with horses.
Advanced training in Canine Rehabilitation I and Equine Craniosacral I, expanding therapeutic capabilities to dogs and adding complementary modalities for comprehensive animal care.
Achieved certification as Equinology Equine Body Worker—a rigorous professional credential establishing my expertise and opening doors to international teaching opportunities.
My practice naturally evolved to include dogs and cats, each species presenting unique anatomical puzzles and rewarding therapeutic outcomes. I discovered that the principles of myofascial release were universal—a common language spoken by the bodies of all creatures.
As my reputation grew, veterinarians, physical therapists, trainers, and bodyworkers witnessed the transformations I was facilitating and asked, "Can you teach me these techniques?" This demand led to my role as an international instructor and primary instructor with Equinology®.
For over 25 years, I've had the extraordinary privilege of teaching myofascial release techniques to thousands of students globally, empowering veterinarians, physical therapists, chiropractors, trainers, and bodyworkers with advanced therapeutic skills.
Teaching venues include: Michigan State University, Writtle College (UK), partnerships with the International Association of Veterinary Chiropractors, Canadian Institute of Equine and Canine Body Workers, Equinology locations worldwide, and specialized courses for groups of veterinarians across Europe and Africa.
Courses taught: Equine Body Worker Certification, Equine MFR I & II, Canine MFR I & II, specialized workshops for veterinarians, and advanced training programs for professional bodyworkers.
My professional journey continued evolving as I sought ways to extend healing benefits beyond hands-on therapy sessions. I've always believed in an integrated approach to wellness—recognizing that the body's healing capacity could be enhanced through natural, tested-grade tools.
This philosophy led me to discover doTERRA Certified Pure Tested Grade (CPTG) essential oils—a perfect complement to myofascial release therapy.
